Athlone Anime Convention.... Possibly

Hi everybody.

For anyone who doesn't already know me I'm the main founder of the University of Limerick Anime and Manga Society and one of the main founders of BroCon.

After some sudden inspiration followed by some brainstorming tonight I decided to do something for anime and manga in my local area as well as in limerick

I'm currently thinking of starting up an anime con in Athlone. Because it's prettymuch the centre of Ireland it makes a perfect place for running an event like this.

I'm currently calling it AsaseCon (I was originally thinking AthCon, then I thought to make it more Anime related I thought Ath is Irish for ford, so I thought instead of using the Irish for Ford I would use the Japanese which is Asase)


Because I just thought up the idea today I'm currently the only person working on this. So is anybody else out there interested in organising a con in Athlone?

I would definately be interested. I love 30 mins from Athlone but can come and go very easily. There's a large number of Anime heads in Athlone too if you need a helping hand from them too

Even though I live near Athlone I don't really know anyone in Athlone who's into anime.

Because of my experience with BroCon and UL Anime Soc I have a mass of contacts and experience which should make it easier to organise, the only thing I'll have to figure out is how run a con without backing from a college (But I think I have an Idea of how to manage that)

Starting up a con without backing is pretty tough but achievable! =) Like Lorraine said you're welcome to come into Dublin and meet up with us in the next few weeks. We hold pretty regular meetings so pm me and let me know if interested?

Summer seems pretty packed for anime cons now so I'm thinking maybe around easter.

I was literally at work and suddenly got the idea. I was excited all night until I finally got home and made sure to start working on it straight away before I changed my mind.

But don't worry about the hard work I've gotten used to it, but it doesn't really feel like work after you see what you've achieved in the end ^^

Okay I have a venue lined up.

I'm thinking the 5th and 6th of February for the convention (and maybe a table quiz on friday the 4th as an ice breaker). I'm just going to see if the dates are available and then finalise it.

And it will take place in the Sheraton Hotel. For anyone who doesn't know Athlone it's the absolute centre of Athlone and about a 5 minute walk from the bus/train station. There's a shopping centre underneath it. Also It's an incredibly easy building to find because it absolutely towers above all other buildings around it.

Good job! It also gives your visitors somewhere to stay so they don't have to do much wandering around Athlone in costume. Do you know if they'd be up for it?

If you don't have a person to run cosplay events, I'd be more than willing. And since I'm the Events Manager for Nom as well, I can help in other areas.

February seems like a good idea. Kitacon is in April, and Minamicon just afterwards so you've aoided clashing with them. And a Spring con is such a nice thing to look forward to.
